Bladder Cancer Assessment and Treatment
Bladder cancer is a relatively common condition, particularly in adults over the age of 50. It often presents with blood in the urine (haematuria), which may be visible or detected on routine testing. While this symptom can be caused by less serious conditions, it should always be assessed promptly.
At my private urology clinics in Manchester, Bolton and Cheshire, I provide a rapid, comprehensive and discreet service for the assessment and management of bladder cancer, ensuring early diagnosis and timely treatment.
Recognising the Symptoms
The most common early sign of bladder cancer is painless blood in the urine. This may occur just once or intermittently, and even a single episode should not be ignored.
Some patients may also experience:
- Increased urinary frequency or urgency
- Discomfort when passing urine
- Recurrent urinary infections
In more advanced stages, symptoms can include pelvic pain or unexplained weight loss. However, many patients present early with minimal symptoms, which is why prompt investigation is essential.
A Structured and Reassuring Assessment
Your care begins with a detailed consultation, where I take time to understand your symptoms and concerns. I recognise that the possibility of cancer can be worrying, and we aim to provide clear, honest guidance throughout.
Initial assessment typically includes urine tests to check for infection and abnormal cells, alongside imaging of the urinary tract. Depending on your symptoms, this may involve ultrasound or a CT scan to provide detailed views of the kidneys and bladder.
Cystoscopy: Direct Examination of the Bladder
A key part of the assessment is a flexible cystoscopy, which allows direct visualisation of the bladder lining.
This is a quick, well-tolerated procedure performed under local anaesthetic. A fine camera is passed through the urethra, allowing us to identify any abnormalities immediately. Many patients find this far more straightforward than expected, and it provides invaluable diagnostic information.
Early Diagnosis and Effective Treatment
The majority of bladder cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, where they are confined to the lining of the bladder. At this stage, treatment is highly effective.
If a tumour is identified, treatment usually involves a minimally invasive procedure to remove it (transurethral resection of bladder tumour – TURBT). This may be followed by additional treatments, such as intravesical therapy, to reduce the risk of recurrence.
In more advanced cases, further treatments may be required, and we work closely with specialist oncology teams to ensure comprehensive care.
A Personalised Approach to Care
Every patient is different, and bladder cancer varies widely in its behaviour. We provide individualised treatment plans, carefully tailored to your specific diagnosis, overall health, and personal preferences.
Our aim is not only to treat the condition effectively, but also to support you with clear communication and continuity of care throughout your treatment journey.
