Blood in Urine (Haematuria) Testing and Treatment

hat Is Haematuria?
Haematuria refers to the presence of blood in the urine and can present in two ways:
Microscopic haematuria – detected on urine testing but not visible
Macroscopic haematuria – visible blood, where urine appears pink, red, or brown
Blood in the urine is not normal and is considered a red flag symptom, requiring assessment by a urology specialist.
Bleeding can arise from anywhere in the urinary tract, including:

Kidneys
Ureters
Bladder
Prostate
Urethra

How Common Is Blood in the Urine?
Microscopic haematuria is commonly found during routine urine testing and is often harmless in younger patients. However, in many cases—particularly in adults over 40—further investigation is essential.
1–5% of patients with microscopic haematuria may have cancer
Up to 25% of patients with visible haematuria may have an underlying tumour
Some patients will have no identifiable cause
You should seek urgent assessment if you experience:
Visible blood in the urine
Persistent urinary symptoms
Loin (flank) pain
