TURP (Transurethral Resection of Prostate)

What is TURP?
TURP is an operation used to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic enlargement). The procedure is performed using a small telescope passed through the penis, meaning there are no external cuts or scars. Excess prostate tissue is carefully removed to improve the flow of urine and relieve symptoms such as poor stream, frequent urination, urgency, and getting up at night to pass urine.

Indications:

  1. Bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms- refractory to medications
  2. Urinary retention
  3. Recurrent UTIs
  4. Recurrent Haematuria

Advantages of having TURP performed privately

  • Rapid access to consultation and treatment
  • Consultant-led care throughout your journey
  • Modern hospital facilities with dedicated nursing support
  • Personalised follow-up and continuity of care
  • Reduced waiting times and flexible appointment scheduling

Possible side effects and risks
As with any operation, TURP carries some risks. These will be discussed fully during consultation. Possible side effects include:

  • Temporary burning or discomfort when passing urine
  • Blood in the urine for a short period after surgery
  • Urinary infection
  • Retrograde ejaculation (where semen passes backward into the bladder during ejaculation)
  • Temporary difficulty controlling urination
  • Erectile dysfunction (uncommon)
  • Scar tissue or narrowing of the urethra (rare)
  • Need for further treatment in the future if the prostate enlarges again

Recovery and what to expect
Most patients stay in hospital for 1–2 nights and go home with a temporary urinary catheter, although many have the catheter removed before discharge. Recovery usually takes a few weeks, during which heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided. Most men notice a significant improvement in urinary symptoms once healing is complete.
