Circumcision Surgery

What is circumcision?
Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin — the fold of skin covering the head of the penis. In adults, circumcision is commonly performed to treat medical conditions affecting the foreskin or for personal, cultural, or religious reasons.

The procedure is usually carried out under local or general anaesthetic as a day-case operation. Dissolvable stitches are typically used, and no hospital stay is usually required.

Indications for circumcision

Circumcision may be recommended for patients with:

  • Tight foreskin (phimosis)
  • Recurrent infections of the foreskin or glans (balanitis)
  • Scarring of the foreskin
  • Pain or difficulty retracting the foreskin
  • Recurrent tearing or bleeding of the foreskin
  • Paraphimosis (trapped retracted foreskin)

Advantages of having circumcision performed privately

  • Rapid access to specialist consultation and treatment
  • Consultant-led care throughout
  • Day-case procedure with modern surgical techniques
  • Personalised follow-up and continuity of care
  • Reduced waiting times and flexible appointments
  • Discreet and confidential care

Possible side effects and risks
As with any surgical procedure, circumcision carries some risks. These include:

  • Swelling and bruising of the penis temporarily
  • Mild pain or discomfort during healing
  • Bleeding
  • Wound infection
  • Sensitivity of the glans during recovery
  • Scarring or cosmetic concerns
  • Tightness or discomfort during healing
  • Rarely, need for further treatment or revision surgery

Recovery and what to expect
Most patients return home the same day. Swelling and sensitivity are common during the first few weeks and gradually improve with healing. Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous exercise and sexual activity for approximately 4–6 weeks.

Most men make a full recovery without long-term problems, and follow-up is arranged to ensure appropriate healing and recovery.
